Experian (888-397-3742)
TransUnion (800-680-7289)

Step 3: Request a free1 annual credit file (either online or by phone) to check for any unfamiliar inquiries and new accounts opened in your name. For your free credit report, visit AnnualCreditReport.com or call 1-877-322-8228.

Step 4: Visit the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) Identity Theft website, a one-stop national resource to learn about identity theft.

Step 5: Contact the Social Security Administration at 1-800-269-0271 to see if anyone else is using your social security number.

1 Under the Fair and Accurate Credit Transactions Act (FACT Act), you are entitled to receive one free credit file disclosure every 12 months from each of the nationwide consumer credit reporting companies. Because new accounts may take up to six months to show up on the report, continue to monitor your credit files.
